Horween Chromexcel — Black · Last 9013
Chromexcel is Horween's most recognized leather — and one of the most copied. This is the original, tanned in Chicago on a century-old formula that combines chrome and vegetable tannages with a hot-stuffing process that drives waxes and oils into the fiber from the inside. The result is a leather that pulls up dramatically with pressure, darkens at the crease, and recovers to a consistent depth. Built on Last 9013 with a full Goodyear double-stitch welt, cork footbed, and HOMK proprietary rubber outsole. Black nickel hardware: 4 flat eyelets below, 3 speed hooks above. Genuine leather toe box and heel counter throughout.

Upper & Lining
Horween Chromexcel — Black, Pull-Up Full-Grain
Horween Leather Company has been operating on Chicago's Goose Island since 1905. Chromexcel is their flagship — a combination-tanned leather that undergoes a proprietary hot-stuffing process in which waxes, oils, and greases are worked into the hide at elevated temperature, saturating the fiber bundle rather than coating the surface. The result is a leather with no topcoat to peel, no finish to wear through, and a pull-up effect that makes every flex point a record of use: press a thumb into the surface and the leather lightens; release it and it recovers. In black, the CXL develops a patina that moves between deep matte and low gloss depending on the angle of light — darker at the creases, brighter at the toe. This is a leather that gets more interesting the less you protect it.
Natural-Color Water-Dyed Cowhide Lining — Imported
The full lining is imported water-dyed cowhide in natural tone — open-pored, breathable, and supple enough to conform to the foot's profile over successive wears without stiffening at the collar or ball. Against the waxy interior of the CXL upper, the natural lining wicks moisture effectively and develops its own patina at the heel and toe where contact is highest.
Construction
Goodyear Welt — Double Stitch, Cork Footbed, Fully Resolable
The construction stack, from the foot down:
- Genuine leather insole — lasted foundation; shapes to the foot over time and transfers load evenly to the midsole.
- Cork fill — packed between insole and midsole, compresses to the foot's unique profile within the first weeks of wear. A footbed that is custom to the wearer by the second month.
- Leather midsole support layer — full-length structural backing that distributes load and adds rigidity underfoot.
- HOMK proprietary rubber outsole — purpose-built compound for the Miner silhouette. Resolable when worn through; the construction above the welt is not disturbed.
Hardware Detail
Black Nickel — 4 Flat Eyelets + 3 Speed Hooks
The hardware runs a mixed column: four flat eyelets from the throat upward, transitioning to three speed hooks at the ankle and above. The split is functional — eyelets hold the lace locked across the forefoot, speed hooks allow the ankle section to be opened and closed in a single pull. Black nickel finish sits tonally with the CXL black upper, dark enough to disappear into the boot at distance while reading cleanly up close. The finish will not oxidize or warm with age; the hardware remains a fixed, quiet reference as the leather shifts around it.

Coming from sneakers? We recommend sizing down half to one full size — for example, a US 9 in Nike translates to approximately US8.5 in this model.
Coming from Red Wing or similar work boots? Select your usual size — the 9013 last fits consistently with standard work boot sizing.

I couldn’t be happier with my HOMK Escape Boots in Brown reverse cowhide. In my opinion, they’re one of the best values in heritage bootwear right now.
For a made-to-order build, the turnaround was impressively fast — just over a month from order to delivery. That alone exceeded my expectations. When they arrived, the quality immediately stood out, and even better, they were comfortable right out of the box.
I opted for the wide fit, and it’s genuinely accommodating — something that’s not always the case with other makers who offer “wide” sizing in name only. The fit feels thoughtfully executed rather than simply scaled up, which makes a real difference if you have wider feet.
The Brown reverse cowhide has great character and texture, and the overall construction feels solid and well-considered. The double row stitchdown is especially impressive — tight, dense, and clean — approaching Viberg-level stitch density at roughly a third of the price. That level of detail at this price point is hard to ignore.
I’d absolutely recommend the Escape Boot to anyone looking for strong heritage aesthetics, serious construction, and excellent value. Based on this experience, I wouldn’t hesitate to explore other offerings from HOMK in the future.
